I, I, I, I workout... I'm pregnant and I know it!

Good news, my 3 hour glucose test results came back normal.  Thank goodness!  I'm going to go eat a candy bar now.  Hahahahaaa, just kidding.

Many moons ago, when I was a footloose and fancy free single gal living it up in Palm Springs, I would do workout videos (I'm talking VHS here, not even DVD's, that's how long ago it was) in my apartment after work everyday.  My two favorites were Windsor Pilates and Leslie Sandsone Walk Away the Pounds (how hilarious is that?!).  While perusing the Target add on Sunday, I noticed a Leslie Sandsone DVD on sale this week and thought I would pick it up.  After all, it's just walking so it would be a good low impact pregnancy workout and will be great for days when the weather is not cooperating with my walking schedule.  I was right!  I popped it in the DVD player last night after work and did 3 miles.  I loved it!

Look how happy she is!  How could you go wrong?

Last night Warren was checking himself out in the mirror and told me he has green eyes.  He's right; he does.  Then he told me I have blue eyes (right again).  He then had to go check out daddy's eyes and said they were green like his.  I asked him what color eyes he thinks baby sister will have and he said blue.  We shall see.

The other day I was trying to teach Warren how old he is.  I kept telling him he is two and holding up two fingers.  He just looked at me very confused and said, "I'm W Warren".  Poor guy must have thought I was trying to change his name to two.  So... next time you see my kid, please don't ask him how old he is.

Here's a little tid bit for you from Saturday:

Pregnancy & Weight & Clothes

A lot of you know that last year I randomly decided to become a runner.  I ran my first 5k and then decided I would run a 10k?  No!  That's too easy... too predictable.  I decided I would run a half marathon and skip right over that 10k nonsense.  Mainly because I knew we wanted to have another baby and it became my goal to finish a half marathon before getting pregnant.  So, while running like a mad woman and training for a half marathon I lost a significant amount of weight and inches and body fat (awesome).  I finally got rid of all the weight I put on from my first pregnancy, and then some.  I was in great shape... and then I got pregnant.  Now I'm terrified of putting all that weight right back on.  I know I'm suppose to gain weight, but after working so hard to lose it, this sure is a mind f#ck!

My first trimester was awful.  Putting on weight was not even an issue for me.  I was so queasy and nauseous that I lost weight.  I felt miserable, never wanted to get out of bed and definitely didn't go running.  Now I'm in my second trimester and feeling pretty darn good.  I've been going out afterwork for short 2 mile jogs whenever the weather allows (I've decided it needs to be at least 45 degrees for me to be comfortable... yes, pregnancy has turned me into a wuss). Some weeks I get out 3-4 times.  Some weeks not at all because the weather is total crap.  It's frustrating.  And since I refuse to pay for a gym membership, running indoors is not an option for me.  I try to watch what I eat (track my calories w/ my fitness pal) but do indulge more than I did prior to becoming pregnant.  I have not adjusted my calorie intake for pregnancy... that's just asking for trouble... still keeping it around 1310/day.  I have been able to maintain pretty well.

I'm keeping my weight in check a lot better with this pregnancy than with the first.  Today I am 24 weeks along and have put on 15lbs.  I was hoping to gain no more than 25lbs (Hey, a girl can dream!) but with another 4 months to go, I'm not sure how that's going to work.

Thus far, I haven't been able to wear any of my maternity clothes from the first time around... they are too big.  Instead I've been wearing my old fat clothes (kept them just for this reason) from before I lost weight.

I lost my mojo

I'm really struggling with running motivation as of late.  When I first started running, I had something to prove.  I wanted to prove to myself that I could run, and I did.  Then I decided to train for a half marathon and every training run was exciting and new because it was something I had never done before; a new challenge.  It was pure passion and dedication.  Then I completed a half marathon, proving to myself that I could (and it felt amazing).  Now that I'm running with no end goal and no race on my schedule it's just not the same.  The excitement has faded.  I ran a four mile loop last night and struggled the entire time.  I'm sure I walked more than I ran.  I hated almost every single minute of it, but did it any way because I know it's good for me and I'm terrified of gaining back the twenty pounds I lost.  Most days I think "if I have to run through Barber Park (my regular running route) one more time I'm going to go crazy".  Where did the love go?  Do you guys ever feel this way?  I need a new route.  I need a new goal.  I need help!

Half Marathon

I did it!  I completed my first half marathon.  It was really amazing.  The first 7 miles went by fast and before I knew it, there were only 3 miles left and I was crossing the finish line.  The weather was perfect.  It was a great day.  My Run Keeper app clocked me in at 2:50:13, but they haven't posted official chip times yet, so I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Warren threw up in the car just before we parked.  It was pretty gross.

Poor Warren

and they're off!

Week 5 Training Update

Today marks week 5 of my 8 week half-marathon training plan.  I'm happy to report that I've only missed 1 work out in 5 weeks (due to Warren sharing his head cold with me).  Yesterday I ran 6.5 miles.  Yes, I did.  It was on the schedule and I did it.  I was nervous since I've never run that far in one session before, but something just clicked and I was able to make it happen.  Granted it was a slow 6.5 miles, but who cares?!  Yay me :)

8 Week Half-Marathon Training Plan

Since finishing my first 5k on March 17th, I've been searching for a new goal.  10k was the obvious choice, but since my ultimate goal is to one day run a half marathon, I decided to just go for it.  I am in week one of this training plan and hoping to run a half on May 19th.  Wish me luck!

Fitbit

My new favorite toy:
Fitbit

I bought myself a fitbit on Saturday as a prize for completing my first 5k.  I LOVE this little thing!  It's a fancy pedometer that counts steps, flights of stairs climbed, calories burned, it even monitors your sleep.  And better yet, the website account and support that goes along with it is free.  It also works with the My Fitness Pal ap I use to track food.  Fitbit will set daily goals for you like reaching 10,000 steps or climbing 10 flights of stairs, and when you reach your goal you earn a badge.  I'm addicted!  I cannot go to sleep at night until I reach 10,000 steps.  Sometimes this means walking in place in front of the TV (like during Monday night's snow/rain storm).

5k Registration

I did it.  I bit the bullet and registered for my very first 5k.  If anybody is looking for me on St. Patty's day, this is where I'll be.  It's at a winery!  How fun is that?!  Will run for wine :)

UPDATE 03/22/12:
The weather was total crap during race week and, of course, on race day as well.  Saturday morning we drove through a torrential downpour for about 23 out of the 28 miles to the winery.  But low and behold, just before race time the clouds parted and the skies cleared.  It was only about 40 degrees and quite windy but thankfully, dry at long last.  Flat is not the word I would use to describe the course.  All these factors combined = one slow Rachel!  No matter, I still ran the whole 3.2 miles without having to stop and walk... which was my goal.  Speed will come later.  I finished in 43:10, the same time some skinny bitch was finishing her 10k, haha!

It Keeps You Running

Just a little update for those of you who are not in the know.  Shortly before Christmas, I randomly decided one day, just out of the blue, that I would become a runner.  I've never been able to run, had any desire to run, nor have I ever enjoyed it.  I've always believed for some reason that I simply can't run.  This is not true.  My progress has been slow and steady, but I'm happy to report that I can now run two miles without having to stop and walk or catch my breath.  I'm planning on running a 5k in May, but I may even be ready for a 10k by then!  I'm also very pleased to report the effects that running has had on my body:  since Christmas I'm down 10lbs and 6 inches.

I love My Fitness Pal

In my seemingly endless quest to lose the baby weight, I downloaded a new iphone app, My Fitness Pal.  Yes, it's free.  I've been dedicated and it has been working for me.  My favorite part about the app is when you complete your daily food/exercise log,  it tells you how much you would weigh in 5 weeks if every day was like today.  So encouraging!   I've lost 7lbs so far.

Famous Potatoes

The Burkholders participated in the Boise "Famous Idaho Potato Race" on Saturday.  Mike ran the 10K and I pushed Warren in the stroller for the 5K; he had a good time!

Slow Carb Torture... I Mean Diet

For me, trying to lose the baby weight has been challenging to say the least.  I'm 4 months post delivery and still have about 10 more pounds to shed.  I've resorted to drastic measures, the slow carb diet.  Let me run down the six simple rules for you:
1.  Eat 30 grams of protein within an hour of waking
2.  Nothing White - no bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, tortillas, nothing w/ flour in it
3.  No Diary (for a Wisconsin girl this has been particularly painful)
4.  Don't drink your calories: no beer, white wine, champagne, fruit juice, soda
5.  No Fruit
6.  Take one day off per week
Ok, now I dare you to find something to eat that fits the rules.  Good luck!
Tonight's Burkholder dinner recipe:
Slow Carb Meatloaf:
1 lb lean ground beef
2 eggs
French onion soup mix
1 cup slightly mashed, cooked lentils (because we can't use crackers or bread crumbs)
salt, pepper & garlic to taste
Bake @ 375 for 30 minutes
